Children, adolescents and
young adults with
(haematological) cancer.
It is our big dream to be able to realise the operation of vzw SuperNils by 2030 in all government-recognised Belgian reference hospitals for AYAs and specialised children's cancer hospitals. Completed, of course, with our current partners!
And we are almost there! So we continue to work hard to reach as many people as possible. Because that is exactly what my brother too would have wanted.Jorn Scheltjens Tweet
11 partner hospitals and 1 open house at present
Currently, vzw SuperNils is active in 11 hospitals and 1 drop-in centre, spread across the five Flemish provinces and the Brussels Capital Region. Started in 2018 in East Flanders, in the UZ Gent, the hospital where Nils himself was being cared for. Very soon UZ Antwerpen taken there, followed by AZ Klina in Brasschaat (province of Antwerp). Thanks to the help of one of our associates, Lymphoma Cancer Association Flanders, we were able to launch the UZ Leuven support, in West Flanders AZ Delta in Roeselare and in beautiful Limburg AZ Jessa in Hasselt. Meanwhile, there are ZAS Cadix Antwerp, ZAS Augustinus Wilrijk, ZAS Jan Palfijn Merksem, ZAS Middelheim Wilrijk and UZ Brussel added. This means that we are currently already active throughout Flanders and the Brussels Capital Region. In 2025 we will add: Jules Bordet and Saint-Luc in Brussels and CHU de Liége in Liège.
Very recently, we also concluded a great partnership with open house Casa Callenta in Brasschaat. There we can have direct contact with people from our target group, in order to better adapt our offer and new ideas to the needs and questions of the patients themselves. We will also develop projects together in the near future, by combining forces and financial resources.
We wrote in the 2024 policy paper that we would be active in all Belgian hospitals with a haematology department by 2030. However, Fight Against Cancer put both feet back on the ground. Floating is no good and an ambition must remain attainable. We therefore adapted our goal and aim to support all Belgian reference hospitals for AYAs (6) and specialised children's cancer hospitals (3), all recognised by the government. This offer is still supplemented by AZ Klina, AZ Delta, AZ Jessa, UZ Brussel and the hospitals in the ZAS group Antwerp, as we already support them in function of the AYA operation. One open house has also already been included among the partners and perhaps some more will be added in the future.
We are busy further expanding our network and looking for additional funding to realise our goal. We do the latter by writing project dossiers, which we use to approach companies, submitting projects to organisations such as the Foundation Against Cancer, Come on Against Cancer and Warmest Week and working out possible sponsorship packages for companies, SMEs and individuals.
