Important information

As a doctor, professor, haematologist and researcher at Ghent University Hospital and affiliated with the University of Ghent, I am very well placed to impart the right information. So be sure to listen to the podcast episodes recorded with me. I talk about the disease, the treatments and the impact on patient and family. Furthermore, I am an active member of the Board of Directors of this non-profit organisation as a medical advisor and was a co-founder of SuperNils. I have therefore helped review and approve the information on this page. Hopefully, you will extract what is important to you.

Innovative research that increases cancer patients' chances of survival or improves their quality of life: that is what Kom op tegen Kanker supports. Especially when the government or pharmaceutical industry does not or insufficiently fund it.
The innovative projects are of high quality and improve the treatment and/or quality of life of cancer patients. They are both clinical and translational research provided that patients are directly involved and central to the research.

Every year, about 400 children - under 15 years old - get cancer out of a total of almost 68,000 diagnoses in Belgium. Children's cancers are therefore rare and require adapted treatment and care.
So that all children with cancer receive appropriate treatment and care, Kom op tegen Kanker funds all paediatric oncology centres in Flanders - UZ Gent, UZ Leuven, UZ Brussel and UZ Antwerpen - so that they can remain active in international clinical studies. In addition, the organisation supports many care projects that improve the quality of life of children with cancer and those around them and ease this difficult period in their lives.

Katie is a serious game about cancer aimed at young people, but anyone can play the game. Click to install the game. Katie is also the name of the main character in the game. She is a young, sprightly woman diagnosed with breast cancer. Together with her, we learn about cancer and the different treatments: surgery, chemo(therapy), radiation, and immunotherapy.
Katie is an idea of haematologist Prof Dr Tessa Kerre (UGent - UZ Gent) and Bruno Bollaert.
With Katie, Prof Dr Tessa Kerre will help break the taboo around cancer, show how basic cancer treatments are, and who knows, maybe sow the seeds in young people to become cancer researchers later.
